A future for Cambodia's Youth

Dragonfly is a Swiss non-profit Friend’s Association, which drives youth projects in Cambodia. We aim to encourage young adults who have reached the age where they have to leave all types of youth-shelters (including orphanages, those for women and street children) as well as youths from deprived rural backgrounds. The Dragonfly projects are set to create meaningful opportunities for these young adults and provide them with a perspective in life.

The first project is the HAVEN Training Restaurant, that offers these young adults a quality vocational training in hospitality, supports them in their transition from institution to real world and mentors them on their way into the professional world. HAVEN furthermore supplies its trainees with protected housing, food and medical treatment.

Following this principle we now want to open a HAVEN Training Guesthouse to be able to offer more and different vocational trainings for disadvantaged young adults. Learn more about it here.

You can help. With little money you can give a young adult in Cambodia a future.

We are currently enjoying ourselves with two construction sites. With a real one, with dirt and trucks and all. And with one in our heads, building and working on ideas and concepts and all.

06/30/2014 | Proudproudproud

We are super proud of the Certificate of Excellence that we got from TripAdvisor and all our wonderful guests at HAVEN Training Restaurant. THANK YOU!

After four weeks of working behind closed doors, HAVEN Training Restaurant will open again today.

12/18/2013 | Review and Outlook

This week we celebrate «2 Years HAVEN», which in itself is already wonderful. But the best birthday and also Christmas present are you guys, 365 days a year! Then without you, all of this would never have been possible! It was your trust in our big idea and your financial support that enabled us to build and open HAVEN. This trust and your strong belief, that you too can make a big and sustainable difference in the life of a disadvantaged young adult in Cambodia, has accomplished so much!

10/26/2013 | Goodbye Jasmin

For six wonderful months Jasmin worked at the HAVEN Training Restaurant. Six months in which she was so much more than "just" an intern from the Hotelschool Thun. She has become part of the HAVEN Family.

In accordance with our claim «A Project for Cambodia's Youth» this year we have extended our focus to underprivileged young adults living in rural areas, giving them a chance to step out of the poverty cycle, as well as vulnerable young adults from safe shelters, supporting them in their transtition into society.

08/28/2013 | A very proud day

On August 24th we celebrated the graduation of our trainees 2012/13, together with their families, guardians and the whole HAVEN Family.

07/30/2013 | See how time flies

It is well known that time flies when you're either having a good time or you're very busy or you're having a good time being busy. I guess we're going through all three of these versions in turns. But seriously, this is just insane! At the moment time is flying so fast that we can literally feel how we are ageing. One moment we're planning something the next moment this something is already a new mile on memory lane.

05/20/2013 | Spring

Spring is the time of plans and projects, as Leo Tolstoy once wrote. And we couldn't agree with him more.

In the past month we have completed some bigger and smaller projects and are now in the planning stage of a new project. But before I start giving you all the details, maybe you want to read our last newsletter from March first. Just click here.

02/25/2013 | Living with Ghosts

I know that it is risky to write about ghosts, as most people reading this blog live in first world countries, where modernity and technoligy have replaced myths, ghosts and superstitions. But living in Cambodia - where modernity and technoligy are still way behind - ghosts and spirits are constant companions of everyday life.

When we founded Dragonfly and set up this website, the big question was if we should have a blog on the page or not. Of course we wanted one, because it's the easiest way for our friends and sponsors to get all the news about our work in Cambodia. But I was also a bit worried about having a blog, as I knew we would be busy enough in Cambodia and I also knew how time-consuming it is to keep up a good blog. Or let's put it this way, there's nothing worse in communications, than not communicating at all.

08/17/2012 | A Summary

«I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date! No time to say hello, goodbye! I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!»

Do you remember Alice in Wonderland's White Rabbit? What I used to laugh about as a child has now become reality for us. Running a restaurant, training and supporting the trainees and constantly optimizing things is so time consuming, that we are lagging behind with all the other things that need to be done like communications, accounting and administration.

But a lot has happened and I don't want to keep you waiting any longer. So here is our summary blog.

06/18/2012 | Anything but Low

The expected and anticipated quiet of the low season hasn't arrived at HAVEN yet – and we're starting to wonder if it ever will... I can't remember where we read this, but apparently Cambodia has had an increase of tourists visiting the country by 40% in the first three months of 2012, compared to the same three months a year ago. I'm quite sure this is all thanks to us and all our friends who are visiting :)

05/05/2012 | Milestone

Mid April Cambodia celebrated Khmer New Year. A festive period lasting several days, that also heralds the rainy season and with it the touristic low season. Personally this is a milestone for us: we officially survived our first high season! And this also pretty well, considering the reviews we get on TripAdvisor.

01/27/2012 | Breathe

Whoever thought that the stressful times were over once we open HAVEN, thought wrong. Including us.

The last two months have been totally crazy and we learnt what its like to be stretched to one's limit. But it was totally worth it! HAVEN is a real jewel.

11/28/2011 | A strong Team

We are on the final spurt of setting up and preparing HAVEN's opening. It is a strength-sapping last lap that is exciting and terrifying at the same time. Yes, we are finally getting down to serious business. Soon the moment will be here, that we have been working for all this time.

This blog entry is dedicated to every one of you who supported us during the terrible floods in Cambodia. Thanks to your financial support and your encouraging words we could make quite some progress setting up HAVEN.

Sadly the international media doesn't report much about it, but since mid September Cambodia is suffering from the worst floods in over a decade.

The Dragonfly newsletter comes out 2-4 times per year.
